Leaning Into the Chaos: Why Authentic Family Sessions Matter

Family photos are a tradition many mothers feel equal parts excited and stressed about. I get it—coordinating outfits, managing nap schedules, and praying for everyone to cooperate can be overwhelming. But let me tell you a secret: the magic happens when you let go of perfection and lean into the beautiful chaos of family life.

Kids are wild—and that’s what makes them amazing. Those raw, unfiltered moments of parenthood—the giggles, the tantrums, the way your toddler grabs your face when they’re excited—those are the moments I’m here to capture. Each family brings something unique to the table, and my goal is to showcase that individuality in a way that feels genuine, not staged.

I don’t take on very many family sessions each year because my approach isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. I lean into a documentary style, guiding families into beautiful light and then letting the story unfold naturally. I’m not hands-off, but I do believe in letting kids be kids and encouraging families to interact and be in the moment. My sessions are about celebrating who you are as a family right now—mess, chaos, and all.

Take Ariel and Rob’s family, for example. Ariel, an incredibly talented interior designer, booked their session right in the middle of a home remodel. There were piles of things out of place and corners stuffed with storage—and it was perfect. Ariel chose to let go of the expectation of a buttoned-up, curated photo shoot and instead embraced her family as they are in this season. The result? Images that are bursting with love, authenticity, and the joy of simply being together.

If you’re a mom who’s been stressing about the "perfect" family photo, I want to encourage you to shift your perspective. Let’s embrace the chaos together and create something real, something you’ll look back on and think, that was us.

5 Tips to Embrace the Chaos and Love Your Family Photos

  1. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection Don’t stress about everyone looking at the camera or standing perfectly still. The best photos capture the love and connection between you and your family—not perfectly posed smiles.

  2. Dress for Comfort and Personality Choose outfits that feel good to wear and represent your family’s style. Avoid matching exactly and opt for colors that complement each other instead. Let your kids wear something they feel great in, even if it’s a superhero cape!

  3. Let Kids Be Themselves If your toddler wants to run, laugh, or make silly faces, let them! Their personality will shine through in the photos, creating memories you’ll cherish.

  4. Embrace Your Current Season Whether you’re in the middle of a move, a remodel, or just everyday chaos, it’s part of your story. Lean into it, and don’t worry about creating a picture-perfect backdrop.

  5. Trust Your Photographer Relax and trust that I’ll guide you into the best light and moments. Your job is to enjoy your family and let the memories happen naturally—I’ll take care of the rest!
